Company history

Dan Toelke started building custom traditional bows in 1996 from his shop in Siren, Wisconsin, and has since become one of the most respected names in traditional archery. What began as a passion for bowhunting has grown into a business known for producing some of the finest longbows and recurves available.

Each Toelke bow is handmade by Dan himself, ensuring that every piece meets his exacting standards. He works with premium materials—exotic hardwoods, carefully selected fiberglass, and quality hardware—to create bows that are as beautiful as they are functional. The attention to detail shows in everything from the smoothness of the draw to the clean lines of the finished product.

The brand’s reputation rests on several core models. The Whip longbow is probably their best-known design, favored by hunters and target shooters alike for its forgiving nature and consistent performance. The Pika offers a shorter option for those who need maneuverability in tight spots, while the Chinook recurve delivers speed without sacrificing the smooth draw that Toelke bows are known for.

What sets Toelke apart is the personal touch. When you order a bow, you’re working directly with Dan to specify draw weight, length, wood choices, and finish details. This isn’t a catalog purchase—it’s a collaboration to build a bow that fits you specifically. The wait time reflects this approach; these aren’t bows sitting on a shelf, they’re made to order.

Traditional archers who shoot Toelke bows often talk about how quiet they are and how little hand shock they produce. These characteristics come from careful design and quality construction, not gimmicks or add-ons. The bows perform well right out of the box and tend to last for decades with proper care.

Based in the quiet woods of northern Wisconsin, Toelke Traditional Archery remains a small operation focused on quality over quantity. Dan’s commitment to building each bow himself means production is limited, but it also means that when you get a Toelke bow, you’re getting something made by someone who genuinely cares about the craft.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the wait time for a custom bow?

Wait times vary depending on current orders, but typically range from 6 to 18 months. It’s best to call Dan directly to get the current lead time. The wait reflects the fact that each bow is handmade to order.

Can I choose my own wood combinations?

Yes, that’s one of the main benefits of ordering a custom Toelke bow. You can select from various hardwoods for the riser and different laminate colors. Dan can discuss options with you and show you what combinations work well together.

What’s the difference between the Whip, Pika, and Chinook?

The Whip is a full-length longbow known for smooth shooting and forgiveness. The Pika is a shorter longbow (around 60″) designed for hunting in tight spaces or for shooters who prefer a more compact bow. The Chinook is a recurve that offers more speed while maintaining a smooth draw.

What draw weights are available?

Toelke bows can be built in a wide range of draw weights, typically from 35 to 70+ pounds. You specify your draw weight and draw length when ordering so the bow is made specifically for you.

Do Toelke bows come with a warranty?

Yes, Toelke bows are guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship. If there’s an issue with the bow due to construction or materials, Dan will make it right. Normal wear and damage from misuse aren’t covered.

What accessories come with the bow?

Toelke bows typically come with a Flemish twist string and a basic finish. You can discuss additional options like leather grips, strike plates, or special finishes when placing your order.
